The time for Embue is right.
The last year has been remarkable for Embue. In November we announced a seed round of $2.3 million, and that, together with a new 3.8M debt financing facility that we recently secured through MassDevelopment, has enabled us to grow our talented team who are dedicated to developing our platform and furthering our reach into the multifamily market. The MassDevelopment financing, combined with additional equity investment we are raising from the venture capital community, will allow us to continue to hire to meet demand for our solution across the US and Canada.
The time for Embue is right. Multifamily owners and operators are looking for ways to make their buildings more profitable, efficient and healthier for residents. At the same time, they are facing a wave of local, state and municipal climate mandates like BERDO in Boston and Local Law 97 in New York City that require the decarbonization of existing buildings.
Eighty percent of the buildings that will exist in 2050 have already been built, which means that building owners need to find ways to decarbonize their buildings now. And multifamily buildings are where the greatest need and the greatest opportunity lie. Apartment buildings make up more square footage in the US than office buildings, making them a huge piece of the carbon pie. All the pieces matter in order to get to zero emissions.
Until now, technology has largely left multifamily behind. There’s been a lot of buzz about smart apartment technology that gives residents access to lots of bells and whistles, and then there are building management systems (BMS). Ask anyone in multifamily why BMS products are almost never seen in their buildings and they’ll tell you that they are too complex to use and 10X more expensive than they can afford.
Because of this, multifamily is a greenfield opportunity. Embue is the only vendor focused on multifamily that delivers whole building intelligence, monitoring, control and automation that reaches into every apartment, every space and every major piece of equipment. Embue enables buildings to be fine tuned and deliver higher performance and lower emissions.
I’m proud to say that today, Embue is under contract in nearly 80 buildings throughout the Northeast and in close to 7,000 units. These buildings are now high performing assets in their portfolios, ready to use our virtual power plant technology to get paid by the utilities’ demand response programs to reduce energy consumption at peak times.
Thanks to the support we have received from MassDevelopment, Embue is ready to take on the enormous opportunity to decarbonize multifamily.
